PNG Manggi

This Papua New Guinea Manggi (PNG young man) is one of my first artwork w/the South Pacific influence. This was done in the 90's as one of my college projects. My father was in Papua New Guinea at the time and had brought home magazines, pictures, & stories about PNG which inspired me to make a few artwork.

Huntington Beach Pier

My favorite season has come. Today, for the first time this year, I finally jumped in our pool. I guess summer is here.
6 years ago, I painted this beautiful pier of Huntington Beach. The most beautiful pier I've ever seen so far. 6 years ago, I went to this pier at least once a week. I have painted it 3 times and I'm still thinking of making a 4th one since I have sold 2 of the 3 I had.

Easter Eggs

We decorated some Easter eggs today. It was so much fun, we took all the other eggs out of the fridge after decorating the boiled ones. 4 yr. old James loved it so much that he wanted the eggs to sleep with him in his bedroom tonight.

It's been a while since my last posting. Here's another one of the few portraits that i've done. The subject is one of my old students in Papua New Guinea...10 years ago. This picture was taken during their cultural show in August 2001. I didn't put this on canvas until I left PNG and started missing it. Such a beautiful place with interesting culture and people.

Miss Travelling

A few days ago, I posted a video of my old trip to Asia on http://pokskids.blogspot.com/. The subject on this painting was actually one of the kids that I met at the Longneck Village in Thailand. The children were beautiful and so innocent about the world outside their community. They all wore a big smile in their faces except for this one in my painting. She seemed very curious about what went on around her.

Carved Long Neck Tribal Woman Wood Wall Hanging 

I was recently reunited with my old students in Papua New Guinea. Thanks to Facebook. Although not very many of them have access to the internet, the few that do will spread the word.
The best 2 years of my life before I got married was spent with these people. Needless to say, they have become an important part of my journey. When I left PNG, I missed it so much that I was able to paint a few of my memories from the land of the unexpected. I still hope that someday I would get a chance to go back and visit.

In this painting....my grade 10 students performing their tribal dance at our school cultural show in 2000.

Huntington Beach Art Center

To all Artists who would like to show or sell their artwork at the Huntington Beach Art Center, there will be a non-juried exhibition on January 21 to February 19, 2011. Submission of work will be on January 8, 2011 from noon to 4pm. There is a participation fee of $15 for one piece and $25 for two pieces. All entries must be original works of art no more than 2 years old (2009-2011). There is a limit of up to 2 pieces of work.

I miss working on abstract body figure. It's fun, quick and for some reason every single painting that I've done using this style has been sold. Do people like abstract in general? or is it the nude subject that they adore?

Missing The South Pacific

5 years ago in New Hampshire I was home sick, so I brought out a picture that my husband had taken when we went to Madang Province in Papua New Guinea. This picture brought me back home. The temperature outside was below 20, but I felt warm. I was alone and it was very quiet around me, but I felt like I was in the middle of the market where we saw these masks, lots of people around me and I could smell the fresh produce and grilled fish the vendors were selling. I was inland, but I could see the water right outside and the small islands in the distant.

Papua New Guinea has one of the best form of art I've seen.  These masks are created to be inhabited by spirits. They are intended both to help the people meet the challenges of everyday life and to ward off the influences of unfriendly spirits. Many of the carvings are also used in ceremonies and rituals that mark the important stages of life.

Most Recent Oil

This is my most recent oil painting....A portrait of a friend in UAE. I started messing up his picture in photoshop and ended up putting it on canvas.

He now has the painting and seem to like it....hmmm...or is he just being nice?

Belly Cast

Just made my belly cast today. The artist?....my husband. And he did a great job.
It's fun and you get to keep a souvenir from your pregnancy. My sister-in-law got me a pregnancy Belly Cast kit which consisted of plaster cast, vaseline, drop cloth, gloves, & sanding screen.
To make the Belly Cast, all you really need is plaster, warm water, drop cloth, vaseline & gloves. The kit comes with an easy to follow instructions. It took us only 30 minutes from preparation to making the actual cast.
WARNING: It's messy!  ...but you'll have fun.

Jack 'O Lantern

We carved our pumpkins today and here they are.... our very own Jack 'O Lanterns!

How to make them?

1. Cut the top off.

2. Scoop the flesh out.

3. Carve an image onto the outside surface, usually a monstrous face.

4. Place a small candle inside to illuminate the effect at night.

In Ireland, where Halloween began, the first jack-o'-lanterns weren't made of pumpkins. They were made out of rutabagas, potatoes, turnips, or even beets! There is an old Irish legend about a man named Stingy Jack who was too mean to get into heaven and had played too many tricks on the devil to go to hell. When he died, he had to walk the earth, carrying a lantern made out of a turnip with a burning coal inside. Stingy Jack became known as "Jack of the Lantern," or "Jack-o'-Lantern."

     From this legend came the Irish tradition of placing jack-o'-lanterns made of turnips and other vegetables in windows or by doors on Halloween. The jack-o'-lanterns are meant to scare away Stingy Jack and all the other spirits that are said to walk the earth on that night. It wasn't until the tradition was brought to the United States by immigrants that pumpkins were used for jack-o'-lanterns.

I also use photography as part of my process in forming a piece of art. I study shadows and light thru my photographs. I enjoy taking pictures of nature....only I wished these animals were not incarcerated when they posed for my camera.
These pictures were taken in 1997 for my photography class in college.

Fall

6 years ago this was my surroundings when October came. I miss this beauty. I took this picture in Rye, New Hampshire one Autumn day in 2004. When we moved to California, I decided to make a couple of paintings of NH. This was my first time to paint with so many colors. I enjoyed it. It brought me back home ...to NH. I gave one of the paintings to my best friend from college when she came to visit us here in CA.

To those who love to travel, I definitely recommend going to New Hampshire in the Fall and check out their foliage. The White Mountains is the best place to see all the colors.

Body Figure

Hi guys!

Here's one of my nude abstract paintings. I've always liked to use human body as my subject when I'm not inspired by anything else. I think human anatomy is beautiful,  however we put them together. It's nature and I love nature. 

This piece has been sold and I'm continuing to paint more with the same style and subject.
